When talking about Aravind, first it
should probably talk about the Aravind Hospital. The Aravind Eye hospital was
founded in the year of 1976 which has only 11 beds in a small hospital in
India, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The founder of Aravind Eye Hospital was Dr.
Govindappa Venkataswamy or also known as Dr. V. Dr. V expressed that he created
the Aravind Eye Hospital with the vision to implement a solution to solve and
ease the problem of blindness in India.
Based on the investigation about the
number of cases of blindness in India, it can be found that there are at least
4 million cases reported every year in India. This number of cases is
nearly a quarter number of blindness cases in the world. It can also be found
that the major blindness problem is caused by the cataract which is
mainly caused by lack of proper nutrition and because of the tropical weather.
Nonetheless, many of the Indian
people were not able to pay for the intervention and surgery and choose to
ignore the eye problem. Based on the data in the year 2006, it was about 25% of
the Indian People were under the poverty line which means their income level is
too low compared with the basic income level. Although the people under the
poverty line who are unable to make the payment for medical is been permitted
to accept free surgery at government-run district hospitals. However,
India is a wide nation which has over millions of people, it had become an
impossible fact to serve all patient and solve all disease.
Until today, Aravind Eye Hospitals
have improved and develop much. Aravind today has successfully grown into a
mature and complete network which includes the postgraduate institute, a management
training and consulting institute, eye care facilities, research institute eye
banks. Moreover, in South India, there are also thirteen eye hospitals,
seventy-five primary eye care facilities, six outpatient eye examination
centers. Compare with before when the first start there is only 11 beds in a
small hospital, Aravind today has become a great social entrepreneur and one of
the largest eye care systems in the world
